Books
The book as a medium — and its limits — is a live theme in Kyle’s essay research. In Books 2.0 - Research the book is celebrated as “perhaps the greatest of human inventions”: a flat object that puts you “inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years,” breaking “the shackles of time.” Reading books is framed as “deliberate, multi-layered, and continuous,” demanding deep focus and inspiring the ongoing reflection that “threads the tapestry of our psyche.” But the same notes catalog the friction: books “store information” yet “can’t create idea trails,” and they have “too much friction.” Open-Source Knowledge - Research sharpens the critique by way of Andy Matuschak’s “Why Books Don’t Work” — books are “not great at conveying information in the first place” — feeding that essay’s “books are dead from day one” opener and connecting to Active Reading and Note-taking.
In The Expertise Economy, books appear in a different register: as one channel of informal, self-directed learning (alongside Videos, articles, Podcasts, and events) inside a culture of Continuous Learning. Across these sources the tag tracks Kyle’s two-sided view — reverence for what books do that nothing else can, paired with a builder’s frustration at their friction and lack of interconnection.
