Marketing
Marketing
In Kyle’s sources, marketing is consistently framed as story and resonance rather than ad spend — the thing that makes an invention iconic, and increasingly something the customer does for the brand rather than something the brand buys. The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread (an early David Perell piece) is the thesis statement: sliced bread became iconic not because it was a great invention but because of great marketing, and “we buy the story as much as the product.” The Everything Store sharpens the point into Kyle’s most-tagged marketing idea — pricing is a marketing strategy: Bezos’s contrarian low-price stance positioned the brand, and Walmart’s Scott put it flatly, “our marketing strategy is our pricing strategy,” pouring ad dollars into price cuts rather than advertising. That overlap is captured in Pricing, the concept Kyle notes pricing “largely is.”
A second cluster of Perell-adjacent long-reads tracks marketing’s shift toward transparency and the customer-as-marketer. Naked Brands argues mass-marketing trust is no longer sustainable and Influencers win because they read as genuine; America Runs On Instagram shows restaurants designed as Instagram bait, turning customers into the distribution channel; and Wearable Brands frames branding as identity and self-expression. The darker counterweight is Brave New World Revisited, where Aldous Huxley’s dissection of commercial propaganda and “motivational research” (cosmetics sell hope, not lanolin) is the cautionary version of the same persuasion machinery.
