Education recurs across Kyle’s corpus less as an abstract value than as a contested, often-failing path to work and mobility. The skeptical strand is strongest. Janesville supplies the empirical hit: laid-off workers who went back to school fared worse on employment and pay than those who didn’t, despite the bipartisan “Retraining gospel.” Managers Not MBAs generalizes the critique to graduate education — management is a craft learned in context, not a profession conferred by a degree, and trying to teach it to people who have never managed “is worse than a waste of time.” Hillbilly Elegy frames the gap between intelligence and knowledge, and students who “don’t expect much from themselves, because the people around them don’t do very much.”
