Human Nature

A recurring tag Kyle uses for the question of which human needs and drives survive optimization, manipulation, or a coldly rational accounting. In Brave New World it marks the question of “which needs survive optimization” — the mowing scene’s “skill and patience” as the one human need the World State cannot decant away, alongside Conditioning and Soma. In Brave New World Revisited the tag attaches to Huxley’s analysis of the “theory of human nature” behind Hitler and Goebbels’ propaganda, and to the split between John Dewey’s faith that human nature can “respond to truth and reason” (the democratic Dr. Jekyll of propaganda) and the motivation analyst Dr. Hyde who studies human weakness “to exploit their irrationality.”

In The Man From The Future, Kyle tags Human Nature on John von Neumann’s Game Theory as “a dim view of humans” — the minimax math as an honest, Hobbesian read on the limits of human cooperation, and the political-philosophy underpinning of why deterrence works. Kyle’s marginal notes there pull the theme toward the John Adams vs. Thomas Jefferson contrast — the optimistic versus pessimistic estimates of what people are.
