Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship
A recurring concept across Kyle’s library, anchored less in theory than in the texture of how operators actually build. Driven supplies the most literal definition: Larry H. Miller’s ten-point account of an entrepreneur (risk/reward, supply and demand, overcoming the fear of failure), lived out as 90-hour weeks for 20 years — “I overpower problems with work” — to build nearly 90 companies while leveraged. The cost is part of the lesson: Miller names entrepreneurship as “central to everything,” including “neglecting my family to do all of the above.” The Magnolia Story tells a softer version of the same bootstrapped, debt-laden striving through Chip Gaines and Joanna Gaines, where constraints (“a tight budget doesn’t have to mean watering down the design”) become a creative spur.
Two books reframe entrepreneurship as something you can’t be taught in a classroom. In What It Takes, Stephen A. Schwarzman argues outright that “you can’t learn to be an entrepreneur,” offering three tests for whether to start a business and naming talent-assessment as the critical entrepreneurial skill. Managers Not MBAs reaches the same conclusion empirically — Henry Mintzberg points to surveys showing MBAs are conspicuously absent among top founders, and argues the “school of hard knocks” experience can’t be made risk-free in a classroom. The Start-Up of You inverts the frame: Reid Hoffman and Ben Casnocha argue you should treat your own career like a start-up in “permanent beta,” with the cautionary market-reality check that “markets that don’t exist don’t care how smart you are… You aren’t entitled to anything.” Kyle’s June 2026 reading capture extends the theme geographically, saving an Irish Times piece on entrepreneurs in Uganda “taking control of their own destiny” under Africa.
