Chip Gaines

Chip Gaines is the co-author (with his wife Joanna Gaines) and central figure of The Magnolia Story. In Kyle’s reading he is the “serial entrepreneur whose constant ‘opportunities’ and risk-taking drive the narrative” — the engine of the book’s bootstrapped, debt-laden striving. Joanna’s account credits Chip with the unshakable belief that she could do things she doubted: “Chip did what Chip does and made all those facts, all that logic, seem irrelevant… He believed I could do it, and he was confident that what I didn’t know, I could learn.” His relentless “opportunities” and “crazy stunts” are what force Joanna to “increase my capacity” and learn to “manage disappointment,” even as they keep the family “barely scraping by and living with huge amounts of debt.” The marriage itself functions as a partnership engine — “Chip and Joanna dreaming together” — central to the book’s themes of Entrepreneurship, Marriage, and Faith.

Context: Chip Gaines (b. 1974) is an American home-renovation entrepreneur and television personality, co-founder of Magnolia and co-star of HGTV’s Fixer Upper with his wife Joanna.
