Tiago Forte
Tiago Forte
Tiago Forte is a recurring figure in Kyle’s tools-for-thought and knowledge-management notes, appearing as one pole of the central debate about how to organize a personal knowledge base. In The Notetaking Cold War, Forte is set against Conor White-Sullivan of Roam Research: Forte thinks notes should be organized by actionability, with each note living “in one and only one place” across his PARA categories — Projects, Areas, Resources, Archives — the “predictable structure” pole, versus Conor’s “infinite flexibility.” The piece reframes their disagreement as a two-thousand-year-old philosophy debate between essentialists and pragmatists about how the world itself is organized. Forte also surfaces in Kyle’s biography of the scene: per Networked Conviction — Roam + Investing - Research, Kyle met Conor White-Sullivan “at a Tiago Forte meetup in SF in 2019.”
Beyond note-taking, Forte recurs as a source of frames Kyle has adopted. In When Java Meets Jive he supplies the “perspective era” thesis — a shift from scarcity to abundance where point-of-view becomes “perspectives-as-a-service,” the new scarce resource. Working in Public quotes him on the same idea from the writer’s side: moving from public to paywalled content trades reach for reader quality because “what people are paying for is not a bunch of text… [it’s] the perspective the writer brings.” And in Just Flow With It, Forte is cited calling flow “the holy grail of productivity.” He is also listed as the person who recommended How To Take Smart Notes to Kyle.
Context: Tiago Forte is the founder of Forte Labs, creator of the PARA method and the “Building a Second Brain” methodology and course, and author of the 2022 book Building a Second Brain. He is one of the most prominent figures in the modern “tools for thought” / personal knowledge management movement.
