Essentialists

Essentialists

In the philosophy-of-knowledge framing from The Notetaking Cold War, essentialists believe the world has a fixed, underlying structure that our categories should mirror — so the “right” note system is one that captures the true nesting of things. The piece groups Plato, Immanuel Kant, and Descartes under this label (despite their differing stances) and contrasts them with the Pragmatists, who treat categories as useful tools rather than discoveries of essence.

Where this appears

  • The Notetaking Cold War — the essentialist/pragmatist split is offered as the deep frame behind the Tiago Forte vs. Conor White-Sullivan debate over how to organize notes, mapping note systems onto rival theories of truth.
