Variational Principles
Variational Principles
In Ted Chiang’s Story of Your Life, variational principles are the physics conceit that drives the whole story. Almost every physical law can be written two equivalent ways: a causal/differential form (Newton’s F = ma, where each moment grows out of the last) and a variational form — the Principle of Least Time or Principle of Least Action — in which nature picks the path that minimizes or maximizes a quantity computed over the whole trajectory. The two formulations are mathematically equivalent, but they imply utterly different ways of experiencing time.
The novella’s key move is that the variational view is implicitly teleological: it requires knowing the endpoint before the path can begin. As the narrator puts it, “the ray of light has to know where it will ultimately end up before it can choose the direction to begin moving in.” Humans find the causal formulation intuitive because the quantities they grasp — kinetic energy, acceleration — are properties of an object at a given moment; the heptapods find the variational formulation intuitive because the quantities they grasp, like “action,” are meaningful only over a whole period of time. Learning to read the universe variationally is what lets Louise know the future and live it anyway — a life becomes a completed shape, like a sentence or a ray of light, rather than a chain of contingencies.
Context: In physics, a variational (or extremal) principle states that the actual behavior of a system is the one that makes some quantity stationary — Fermat’s principle of least time for light, or the principle of least action (Hamilton’s principle) for mechanics. These are provably equivalent to the standard differential equations of motion but recast them as a global optimization over the entire path.
