Fermat’s Principle
The conceptual spine of Ted Chiang’s Story of Your Life. Fermat’s Principle (the Principle of Least Time) says light travels the path that minimizes the time to its destination — and the story uses it to dramatize the difference between two ways of reading physical law. Almost every physical law can be written two equivalent ways: a causal/differential form (Newton’s F = ma, where each moment grows out of the last) and a variational form (a variational principle where nature picks the path that minimizes a quantity computed over the whole trajectory). The variational view is implicitly teleological — it requires knowing the endpoint before the path can begin: “The ray of light has to know where it will ultimately end up before it can choose the direction to begin moving in.”
In the story this becomes the formal counterpart to the heptapods’ simultaneous consciousness and to Louise’s acquired ability to experience her whole life at once. The physical universe is “a language with a perfectly ambiguous grammar”: every event can be parsed causally (one moment causing the next) or teleologically (a goal to be minimized, requiring knowledge of the endpoint), both valid, neither disqualifiable. Knowing the future and living it stop being opposed — they become complementary the way specifying boundary conditions and computing the action are complementary in physics.
Context: Fermat’s Principle, formulated by Pierre de Fermat in the 17th century, states that light takes the path of stationary (typically least) travel time between two points; it explains refraction and is one of the classic “variational principles” of physics, alongside the Principle of Least Action.
