The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Why it’s on the list: Twain’s novel of Huck, escaping his father, and Jim, escaping slavery, going down the Mississippi on a raft — it turns on the moment Huck tears up the letter that would return Jim, believing he will go to hell for it.
Where I heard about it
- Founders Classical Academy — it opens the eleventh-grade American year on the reading list at the classical school in Lewisville, Texas, six years after the same student read Tom Sawyer; posted by the Classic Learning Test in September 2026 as an example of what a classical curriculum assigns. The full eight-year sequence is on Founders Classical Academy Reading List.
About this edition
Published 1884. Huck fakes his own murder to escape his father and meets Jim running from being sold down the river; the decisive letter comes in chapter thirty-one. Hemingway’s claim that all modern American literature comes from it is the standard overstatement, and the standard overstatement is close to right.
