Why it’s on the list: Mark Twain’s 1876 novel of a boy in a Mississippi River town who talks his friends into whitewashing a fence, witnesses a murder in a graveyard, attends his own funeral, and is trapped in a cave with the killer. Twain called it a hymn to boyhood, and it is — but the graveyard and the cave are in it, and they are not decorative.

Where I heard about it

  • Founders Classical Academy of Lewisville, Texas — on its fifth-grade reading list, posted by the Classic Learning Test in September 2026 as an example of what a classical curriculum assigns. It is paired with Huckleberry Finn six years later, which is the point: the same river and the same boy world, read once at ten as an adventure and once at sixteen as a moral crisis. The full eight-year sequence is on Founders Classical Academy Reading List.
