Why it’s on the list: Twain’s first historical novel (1881): Edward Tudor, heir to Henry VIII, and Tom Canty, a beggar, discover they are identical, swap clothes as a lark and cannot swap back. The prince learns what his laws do to the people they fall on; the pauper learns what it costs to be believed — Twain’s cleanest version of the argument that rank is an accident and justice looks different from underneath.
Where I heard about it
- Founders Classical Academy — on the sixth-grade list at the Lewisville, Texas school, posted by the Classic Learning Test in September 2026 as an example of what a classical curriculum assigns. Eleventh grade meets the same argument again, harder, in Huckleberry Finn. Full sequence: Founders Classical Academy Reading List.
