Techno-Optimist Manifesto

The Techno-Optimist Manifesto is Marc Andreessen’s 2023 a16z essay, which recurs across Kyle’s writing as the crystallizing document of the effective-accelerationism (e/acc) worldview. In It’s Time To Build… But Build What, Kyle treats it as the sequel to Andreessen’s “It’s Time To Build,” arguing it “crystalized a growing dichotomy between effective altruism (aka EA) and effective accelerationism (aka e/acc)” and that much of accelerationism traces its roots back to the earlier “Time To Build” piece. In Venture Capital’s Fourth Turning, Kyle uses it as the sharpest contrast between old-guard “make the world a better place” values and the new-age stance — noting that the manifesto not only makes the techno-optimist case but “explicitly articulates ‘the enemy.’”

The manifesto leans on two intellectual anchors Kyle has mapped. It cites Ray Kurzweil’s Law of Accelerating Returns as a key claim — Kurzweil being Kyle’s canonical case of hyper-optimistic exponential-curve futurism — and it closes with David Deutsch’s line: “We have a duty to be optimistic. Because the future is open, not predetermined… it is our duty to fight for a better world.” Kyle uses Deutsch’s line as the moral grounding for the e/acc / Techno-Optimism section of his research.
