The writing and developer-experience brand of Shawn Wang — known online as @swyx. His core doctrine is Learn in Public: share your work and learning in public so that it compounds into a recognizable presence.
His 2020 thread “How to Market Yourself (without Being a Celebrity)” — one of the most circulated developer-branding guides — argues that people will inevitably put you in a box, so you should help them choose an expensive one at eye level near checkout. Key frames from that thread:
- Planting a flag: pick one domain, give up optionality in it, and commit publicly. “What you lose in freedom you gain 10x in marketing.”
- Branding vs. marketing: branding is the stuff that uniquely identifies you; marketing just gets your work in front of people. The strongest branding creates its own market.
- Proof of work: a blog is the universal medium; portfolios display work but over-emphasize breadth; “instantly verifiable proof of work” is what converts.
- Identity + opinions: “Who you are + What you’re about” — the formula for a recognizable personal brand.
In Developer Relations, swyx identified that most DevRel dashboard tools (Common Room) are backward-looking vanity metrics rather than actionable prompts.
