Personal Branding

How you are described when you are not in the room. swyx’s framing in his “How to Market Yourself (without Being a Celebrity)” thread: “Your Personal Brand is how people talk about you when you’re not in the room.”

Key principles from that source:

  • You don’t have to market to the whole world. Target specifically the audiences you want to work for — if you are well-known in those circles, you need no public presence at all.
  • Branding vs. marketing. Branding is the stuff that uniquely identifies you; marketing gets your work in front of people.
  • The strongest branding creates its own market. It is easy to sell to a market in which you are the only seller. Nobody can compete with you at being you.
  • Put people in the right box. People want to categorize you — the goal is to help them put you in “an expensive, high-sentimental-value, glittering, easy to reach box.”
