Self-Reliance (Emerson)
Self-Reliance (Emerson)
Why it’s on the list: Emerson’s 1841 essay and the founding document of American individualism: trust yourself, imitation is suicide, a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. An argument delivered as aphorism, which is both why it has lasted and why it is easy to quote without reading.
Where I heard about it

Posted by the Classic Learning Test in September 2026; full sequence on Founders Classical Academy Reading List.
- Named by Patrick O’Shaughnessy among the most influential essays he has read (X, June 2020); — Most influential essays I’ve ever… (tweet).
- In Patrick O’Shaughnessy’s Full Reading List (Investor Field Guide, 2016) — the archive of his monthly book-club recommendations, saved by Kyle in April 2020 — Full Reading List (Investor Field Guide).
- Will Manidis’s “most underrated PDF” thread, July 2023 — posted as an answer. See The Most Underrated PDF on the Internet (July 2023).
