We (Zamyatin)

Why it’s on the list: Yevgeny Zamyatin’s dystopia, written in 1920–21 and banned in the Soviet Union: a mathematician in the glass-walled One State keeps a journal and discovers he has an interior life. Orwell reviewed it, and Huxley was accused of borrowing from it.
