Unit Economics
Unit Economics
The profitability of a single unit of a business (a customer, an order, a transaction), usually judged through gross margin, customer acquisition cost, payback period and LTV/CAC. The wiki treats it as the test of whether growth is creating value.
How it shows up
- Gross margin as the signal. Kyle’s tweet comparing Opendoor ($8B revenue, market cap down from $19B to $1B), Bird and Twilio argues gross margins can kill a business (Opendoor has $8B in revenue… (tweet)); the idea is developed on Gross Margin, which calls gross margin a proxy for a software business’s unit economics and pricing power.
- Deferring it. Kyle’s post on Uber says the generation’s startup playbook was to “burn your unit economics into the ground in pursuit of scorched earth” and pursue sustainable economics only afterwards (Uber defined the current generation… (tweet)).
- Measuring it. Tren Griffin doubts quoted customer acquisition costs (“pretty much making it up,” with creative cost allocation) (I Feel Like Every Time… (tweet)).
- Using it to build. A seed-stage post argues a bottoms-up financial model shows how challenging a product’s unit economics are, whatever the final projections say (Building a Financial Model at… (tweet)). Another frames a company as a pool of capital across COR, S&M, R&D and G&A that must return more than its cost of capital (1)capital Allocation 101 - Founder… (tweet)), and a SaaS thread zooms in on unit economics and bimodal (freemium plus enterprise) go-to-market ((1-10) There’s a Lot of… (tweet)).
- Marketplaces and ads. The Hierarchy of Marketplaces — Level 2 (Sarah Tavel) tags “Now is the time to grow” with the topic. Ben Thompson’s interview with Eric Seufert describes performance marketing as getting cost below expected value for a targeted segment and running that at scale (An Interview with Eric Seufert about Apple, Facebook, and Mobile Advertising).
- Funding cycles. On the 20VC episode, founders after the correction are described as more thoughtful about which story to tell (unit economics, market size, product-market fit) (20VC — Why 75 Percent of Active Investors Will Disappear).
