The Baroque Cycle

Three volumes — Quicksilver (2003), The Confusion (2004) and The System of the World (2004) — set across the late-seventeenth and early-eighteenth centuries, following natural philosophers, vagabonds and coiners through the birth of the Royal Society, joint-stock finance and the recoinage of England.

Why it’s on the list: Kyle’s thread asked for historical fiction about building and trade rather than violence; the Baroque Cycle is the canonical answer — a novel-length argument about how science, money and commerce were invented at the same time by the same people. Page count is Quicksilver, the first volume.
