Surface Detail

A 2010 Culture novel about simulated afterlives — civilisations that run virtual hells for their dead — and the war fought, partly in simulation and partly not, over whether such places are permitted to exist. The Culture is on one side of that argument, which forces the series’ usual questions about intervention into their sharpest form.

Context: the ninth entry in a16z’s Culture listing, and the volume that takes substrate independence literally: if minds can be run, then who owns the machine becomes a question about suffering rather than about compute. Hard to read as anything but a live argument now.
