Stealth
Stealth is the central technical subject of Skunk Works — the achievement of extremely low radar cross-section, realized in Lockheed’s Have Blue prototypes, the F-117, the Sea Shadow stealth ship, and earlier low-observable spy planes. Ben Rich recounts that the breakthrough’s theoretical foundation came from an openly published Soviet paper by Pyotr Ufimtsev (translated by the Air Force), whose own “senior Soviet designers were absolutely uninterested in” his diffraction theories — a thread Kyle connects to Open Source. Lockheed built two Have Blue demonstrators in roughly twenty months using scavenged avionics “right off the Kmart shelf” (flight controls from the F-111, computer from the F-16, navigation from the B-52) for about $30 million, then flight-tested them for two years.
The book frames stealth as the decisive shift in air warfare. Briefers knew that if the prototype “lived up to its billing… Air warfare and tactics would be changed forever. Stealth would rule the skies.” Rich tells Brzezinski it “changes the way that air wars will be fought from now on” and “cancels out all the tremendous investment the Russians have made in their defensive ground-to-air system.” Bill Perry, the Pentagon’s R&E chief, backed it and immediately stood up a counter-stealth research office. The Soviets’ indifference to stealth — rooted in the older missiles-and-radar paradigm — spurred Perry to “start small with a few fighters and learn lessons applicable to building a stealth bomber.”
Kyle’s notes repeatedly slot stealth into the Evolution of Warfare framework — soldiers → planes/tanks → radar/missiles → stealth → drones — observing that “stealth WOULD rule the skies until small autonomous drones changed it again,” that Russia was slow to adopt it because of the old radar/missile paradigm, and wondering whether there was ever an era dominated by “stealth cruise missiles.”
Context: Stealth technology reduces an aircraft’s detectability across radar, infrared, acoustic, and visual signatures. Lockheed’s Have Blue (late 1970s) led to the operational F-117 Nighthawk, the first stealth aircraft to enter service, drawing on Ufimtsev’s physical theory of diffraction.
