Starting Strength

A barbell training manual, first published in 2005 (co-authored in that edition with Lon Kilgore) and best known in its later solo editions. Rippetoe teaches a small set of compound lifts — squat, press, deadlift, bench press, clean — by describing the mechanics of each in unusual anatomical detail, then prescribing a linear progression for novices. It is the reference text for the argument that beginners should add weight to a few full-body movements rather than chase variety.

Why it’s on the list: A coaching manual treated as a canonical text — a case study in how much of a physical skill can be transmitted by writing down the mechanics precisely enough.

Where I saw it: @FilArons’s recommended-reading list, November 16, 2025.

Connections

  • Exercise — the subject.
  • Deliberate Practice · Mastery — the pedagogy: a narrow set of movements, drilled with progressive load and corrected against an explicit model of good form.
