In Boom — Bubbles & The End of Stagnation, the Manhattan Project is the book’s purest case study of an innovation-accelerating bubble — a megaproject that “accomplishes a set of tasks in parallel that would never be accomplished serially.” The book argues it had all the trappings of a successful bubble: risk tolerance from institutions with immense capital, a clear sense of urgency, concentrated talent (Los Alamos as “probably the largest concentration of brainpower ever assembled”), massive parallelization across institutions, and the perceived competition from Nazi Germany. It tolerated enormous waste — running multiple uranium-enrichment facilities in parallel “knowing that at least some of them wouldn’t work” — because the more important risk was that the bomb wouldn’t get finished at all. Its spillovers outlived it: “The Manhattan Project gave us nuclear power and a good reason to develop better rockets,” the kind of lasting innovation that defines Nuclear Energy as an “apocalyptic technology” bubble. The book contrasts Richard Feynman (anti-bureaucratic genius, safecracking against security theater) with Oppenheimer (the cultured organizer of physicists) as its two poles.
In The Man From The Future, the project is the institutional setting for John von Neumann’s wartime work — the OSRD’s nuclear arm “morphed into what became known as the Manhattan Project,” a $2B effort employing 100,000+ people, with Leslie Groves choosing Oppenheimer to lead the lab. That book treats it less as a bubble and more as the crucible where von Neumann’s computing and game-theory work intersected the bomb, and as the origin of figures and institutions (e.g. the Federation of American Scientists) that shaped postwar nuclear strategy.
Context: The Manhattan Project (1942–1946) was the U.S.-led, ~$2B WWII effort that produced the first nuclear weapons, centered at Los Alamos under J. Robert Oppenheimer and General Leslie Groves.
