In Boom — Bubbles & The End of Stagnation, fracking serves as one of the core case-study bubbles illustrating the book’s thesis that financial bubbles can accelerate real innovation. The authors note that for decades fracking “seemed promising but didn’t deliver much” — it was more expensive than other extraction methods and “mostly relegated to desperate producers.” Leases of frackable land “looked like a hundred-dollar bill on the sidewalk,” but picking it up was hard both as an engineering and a narrative problem. They argue fracking “reveals how the risk-taking and ingenuity of a small group of speculators, engineers, and entrepreneurs can radically alter an industry’s entire trajectory.”

The book uses fracking to sharpen its distinction between mean-reversion bubbles (driven by “sin”) and aspirational, innovation-accelerating bubbles (driven by “virtue”). On its surface fracking looks like “a pure example of a mean-reversion bubble fueled by sin” — extractive, profit-driven, envisioning the future as a continuation of the fossil-fueled present. But the authors argue that even though the motivations were “mostly profane,” the technique “nevertheless realized an aspirational vision”: it helped the US achieve energy independence, with “similarly large-scale geopolitical effects” to a moon landing — freeing American policy from the entanglements with volatile oil-producing regions that had shaped Middle East involvement for decades. They note fracking, like Apollo and the Manhattan Project, generated “intense backlash,” and that the “fracking dividend” made the world richer in energy in a way too diffuse to make headlines. Etymologically the book ties it to Innovation’s “primordial sense” — Xenophon’s kainotomia, “opening new veins.”

Context: Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) injects high-pressure fluid into shale rock to release trapped oil and gas. The US shale boom of the late 2000s and 2010s transformed America into the world’s largest oil and gas producer, while drawing sustained environmental opposition over water use, methane, and induced seismicity.
