Enterprise Software

Enterprise software is software sold to organizations to run their operations: systems of record, planning, quality management, search and analytics, and the like. In this wiki it works mostly as a topic tag, used for market commentary, newsletters and company examples rather than for a single argument. The saved material falls into a few groups.

  • Where to read about it. Saved resource lists, including the weekly newsletter What’s Hot in Enterprise IT-VC by Ed Sim (What’s Hot in Enterprise IT-VC — Issue 196 (Ed Sim)).
  • Why spending is high. Software Wasteland (Dave McComb) argues enterprise software spending is far too high because every application brings its own data model, and that a single data-centric ontology is the way out.
  • Systems of record and AI. A saved post by BuccoCapital Bloke (filed with Software Moats) makes the point that “almost no serious business is going to internally rebuild their core systems of record/critical infrastructure,” and another of his posts on Samsara argues that a hook into hardware and the physical world makes a software company less likely to be disrupted by AI. Kyle’s own thread on “enterprise AI transformation” pitches treats AI in the enterprise as an implementation challenge as much as an innovation one, which moderates how fast displacement can happen.
  • Business models. A saved thread on Elastic, an open-source search engine turned public company (a 130% net expansion rate and 630 customers with ACV over $100K), is the example filed under Open Source Business Models.
  • Category creation. Martin Casado asks for modern examples of category creation, since the classic ones (PC, disk drives, server virtualization, flash) are dated.
  • Geography. Tencent Pledges $70 Billion Investment in AI and Cloud (CNBC) is filed here with Trends.
  • Companies. Anaplan (connected planning) and EtQ (quality-management software for regulated manufacturers) are the company pages that link here. Related concepts: SaaS, Software Economics.
