A former Navy SEAL task-unit commander’s field manual on self-discipline, written as short imperative chapters rather than as an argument — waking before dawn, training, diet, and the daily decision to act when you do not want to. The title is the thesis: freedom of action is a downstream product of constraints you impose on yourself, not the absence of them.

Why it’s on the list: Tyler Cosgrove put it on a list otherwise made of history and industrial policy, which makes it the one entry about the operator rather than the system.

Where I saw it: @tylercosgrove’s October 15, 2025 list of 25 books he offered to send to Jared Kushner.

Connections

  • Discipline Is Destiny — the same subject from the Stoic side; worth reading against this one.
  • Leadership — where the habit argument connects to running anything.
