Categorization

Categorization is one of the core error-sources Kyle pulls from The Black Swan. Taleb’s formulation: “Categorizing is necessary for humans, but it becomes pathological when the category is seen as definitive” — once a category is treated as fixed, nuance gets crushed under labels, people stop considering the fuzziness of boundaries, and they fail to revise the categories at all. Taleb names this tendency “Platonicity,” and notes that “categorizing always produces reduction in true complexity.” In Kyle’s reading it connects to the “beliefs as a leading vs. lagging indicator of group membership” frame from Romney — A Reckoning, and sits alongside Confirmation Bias as a companion failure mode — both being ways the mind oversimplifies evidence to fit a story it already holds.
