Broken Angels

The second Kovacs novel, and a deliberate change of genre: instead of a detective story it is a war-and-salvage story, with Kovacs fighting in a corporate-backed colonial conflict and then assembling a team of specialists to claim a buried alien artefact while the war burns around them. The interesting thread is commercial — who owns a discovery, who is expendable in the retrieval, and what a company will trade for exclusive access.

Context: On the a16z Infra Reading List under the Takeshi Kovacs series, second of three. It follows Altered Carbon but stands alone; the shared element is the world’s backup-and-resleeve mechanics, not the plot.
