A concept Kyle traces across two very different senses — organizational/operational autonomy and human self-determination — that he treats as related faces of the same idea. On the management side, Berkshire Hathaway Annual Letters makes autonomy a core operating principle: acquired managers “operate autonomously… no second-guessing by Charlie and me,” and Berkshire wins as “buyer of choice” by granting “unusual autonomy to our managers.” Kyle’s margin note (“Autonomy — is this how Tiny does it?”) connects Buffett’s hands-off ownership to the Tiny holding-company model. Skunk Works frames it operationally as “high autonomy / low oversight, specific objective, freedom to take risks, deliberate but controlled budget” — the Lockheed model for fast, secret development — and overlaps with autonomous (pilotless, drone) systems.

In The Kill Chain, autonomy is mostly machine autonomy: the shift from “few exquisite platforms to many cheap autonomous nodes,” where “autonomous systems aren’t about removing humans, they’re about expanding human capacity” (with explainable AI as the load-bearing prerequisite for trust). The Self-Driven Child supplies the psychological theory: Deci and Ryan’s self-determination theory (autonomy, competence, relatedness) as the book’s organizing model, with autonomy positioned as the developmental mechanism itself — the explicit anti-thesis to the no-autonomy Tiger Mother approach. Kyle links this human sense back to Agency and the LDS framing that “agency takes practice.”
