Why it’s on the list: Amor Towles’ novel of Count Alexander Rostov, sentenced to house arrest in a grand Moscow hotel in 1922, who finds a whole life within its walls across decades of Soviet history.

Where I saw it: Recommended by a colleague during a work call in December 2021.
