Young Men and Fire

Maclean’s reconstruction of the 1949 Mann Gulch fire in Montana, where a crew of smokejumpers was overtaken by a blowup on a steep grass slope. He spent the last years of his life on it, working the physical evidence of the ground and the surviving accounts into a minute-by-minute account of how fast the fire actually moved and why the men could not outrun it. Published posthumously by the University of Chicago Press in 1992.

Why it’s on the list: It is the one work of nonfiction on the otherwise fiction-and-memoir syllabus of Writing and the English Language — a study in reporting a catastrophe precisely enough that the prose itself does the explaining, with no room for the writer to be approximately right.
