Why Does He Do That? Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men
TL;DR — Bancroft’s study of abusive men, drawn from fifteen years running court-mandated programmes for batterers.
Lundy Bancroft spent fifteen years running intervention programmes for court-mandated abusers, and wrote the book from that vantage.
Its central argument cuts against the therapeutic consensus: abuse is not a loss of control, an anger-management deficit, or a symptom of trauma. It is a coherent system of beliefs about entitlement, and abusers are in control of their behaviour — which is why they abuse selectively and stop when it is costly.
Widely regarded as the single most useful book for someone trying to understand what is happening to them, and it is written for that reader rather than for clinicians.
