Who Has Seen the Wind

W. O. Mitchell’s first novel, 1947, and a standard text in Canadian schools ever since. Brian O’Connal grows up in a small Saskatchewan town during the Depression, and the book follows him from about four to about twelve as he works out, by watching a gopher, a dog, a grandmother and finally his own father, what death is and what the prairie has to do with it. The title is from Christina Rossetti.

Context: First published 1947. Lexile 900. Filed under Fiction. Note that it is a Canadian novel on an explicitly American reading list — the curator groups it with the coming-of-age fiction rather than with the national material. What it offers is the slow version of a child’s moral education: nobody explains anything to Brian, and he assembles his understanding out of what he is allowed to see.
