Why it’s on the list: The Oxford History volume on 1815–1848 — the decades when communications and transport technology remade American politics. Saved twice from different accounts.
Won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for History. The title is the first message sent by telegraph, which is the book’s organizing idea.
Where I saw it: Twice on X: @patdennis, February 8, 2026 (“Mandatory reading for all”) and @Kurt_Steiner, December 25, 2025 (“This cover is lit.”).

- Historical Futurism — a communications revolution reorganizing a country, which is the analogy everyone reaches for now.
