Valve — Handbook for New Employees

Valve Corporation 2012 View original ↗

TL;DR — Valve’s flat-hierarchy handbook — ‘a fearless adventure in knowing what to do when no one’s there telling you what to do’.

Valve Corporation. “A fearless adventure in knowing what to do when no one’s there telling you what to do.”

The most-circulated corporate handbook ever written. It describes a company with no managers and no fixed roles, where desks have wheels because employees are expected to move themselves to whatever they judge most valuable, and where hiring is described as the single most important thing anyone does.

Read it with the hindsight: the model produced extraordinary products and also, by later accounts, an opaque internal politics and a punishing stack-ranked compensation system. It is a genuinely radical organisational document and an incomplete account of its own costs.
