Why it’s on the list: Two enslaved people are sold from the same Kentucky farm: Eliza escapes north across the ice with her child, and Tom is sold south into the hands of Simon Legree. Published in 1852, it sold three hundred thousand copies in its first American year and was the best-selling novel of the century.
