Tocqueville (Mansfield)

A short interpretive guide to Tocqueville by his principal modern translator, covering the two volumes of Democracy in America and The Old Regime and the Revolution. Mansfield’s reading stresses Tocqueville as a political scientist of a “new kind” — one who took democracy as an irreversible social fact and then asked what in it needed checking, especially the drift toward individualism and administrative centralisation.
