Three Doors to Other Worlds

Andrew Crompton 2001 View original ↗

TL;DR — A Manchester architect’s essay on three anonymous places that resist description and seem to be doorways out of the world.

Andrew Crompton (University of Manchester) looks for architecture that is “immaterial” in both senses of the word: hard to capture in a photograph or measured drawing, and lacking an obvious purpose. He presents three anonymous examples, places where people can vanish, which read together as stories of death, hell and heaven. Six pages, from the Journal of Architectural Education.

What it is: a short, unusual academic essay. It is architecture criticism, not anything paranormal.
