Thrasio

Thrasio is an Amazon-marketplace aggregator, a holding company that rolls up third-party seller businesses. It is the reference case in Kyle’s notes for e-commerce roll-ups and, later, for the question of whether AI roll-ups will repeat them.

  • 2020 rise. Saved tweets from April 2020 record the opening of the story: Andrew Wilkinson opens a thread on Thrasio raising $110M at a $780M valuation, asking whether it is “either ingenious or insane,” and Nikhil Basu Trivedi quotes a Crunchbase piece saying gross revenue went from zero to over $200 million in 18 months, with over $35 million in trailing-twelve-month EBITDA.
  • Later skepticism. A February 2022 post asks how the Amazon/eCommerce roll-ups are doing, doubting that “buying a bunch of covid beneficiaries and levering them up is playing out so well.” The Vertical AI Playbook says Thrasio raised more than $3B, peaked near a $10B valuation in October 2021 while doing about 1.5 acquisitions per week, and filed for bankruptcy in February 2024 when rates rose. It contrasts the survivors, Metropolis (Company) and Teamshares, as selective rather than volume-driven.
  • Used as a warning. Networked Conviction 004 cites Thrasio, Tiny and OpenStore as ecommerce roll-ups that together raised roughly $15B, “almost all of which has gone or will go to zero,” and expects “dramatic” capital destruction in AI roll-ups.
  • The category. See E-Commerce Tech Roll-Up, eCommerce Rollups and Roll-up Strategy.
