The Thirty Years War

Why it’s on the list: Wedgwood’s 1938 narrative of the war that wrecked central Europe — written on the eve of the next one, and explicit that the conflict settled nothing anyone had fought for. Her verdict, that it was a meaningless war, is the reason the book still gets argued with.
