The Road to Serfdom in Cartoons

F. A. Hayek / General Motors 1945 View original ↗

TL;DR — Hayek’s argument compressed into an eighteen-panel cartoon strip and mailed out by General Motors.

The Look magazine cartoon adaptation, reprinted and distributed by General Motors in 1945.

Hayek’s book rendered as a strip: a nation adopts planning for good reasons, planning requires a planner, the planner requires power, and the sequence ends in a strongman.

The compression is the document. A dense work of political economy turned into eighteen panels and mass-mailed by a corporation is a landmark in the popularisation of ideas — and a fair specimen of how much an argument loses on the way.

Opens on Hayek’s own framing: “We must regain the conviction on which liberty in the Anglo-Saxon countries has been based.”
