The Railway King

The Railway King is the standing nickname of George Hudson, the York financier who by 1848 controlled over a thousand miles of British railway and was ruined the following year when it emerged he had been paying dividends out of capital. Robert Beaumont’s biography follows him from draper’s apprentice to the most powerful man in British railways and through the collapse that made him the era’s defining financial scandal.
