The People Shall Judge

The two-volume documentary reader built for the University of Chicago College’s Social Sciences 1 course — founding-era pamphlets, constitutional debates, Supreme Court opinions, speeches and policy arguments arranged so that students argue from the primary sources rather than from a textbook’s summary of them.

Why it’s on the list: It sits in The American Experiment section among the primary-source collections — the list’s choice for reading the American argument in the participants’ own words, next to The Founders’ Constitution and the Federalist.
