The Official Preppy Handbook (duplicate scan)
TL;DR — The 1980 satire that America read as an instruction manual — and followed.
Edited by Lisa Birnbach, 1980. “Look, Muffy, a book for us.”
Written as satire — a mock-anthropological guide to schools, dress codes, nicknames, the sock question and the importance of getting kicked out — and then bought in millions by people who used it straight. That gap between intent and reception is the whole cultural story, and Birnbach has spent decades explaining it.
A genuine primary source on American class signalling, and funnier than the genre it created.
The are.na channel carries this scan twice. The written-up card is The Official Preppy Handbook; this entry exists so the second file is accounted for rather than silently dropped.
