One-line: A keynote to operations students arguing that a factory is not a building but a way of thinking — decompose, automate, find the bottleneck, repeat — and that AI’s real contribution is giving more people a shot at redesigning it from first principles.

Delivered at the 2026 Tauber Global Operations Conference at Michigan’s Ross School. The first half is the case for why the topic matters; the second is the framework.

The wake-up. Price-Wright opens on Palmer Luckey’s “Hard Truths” about a manufacturing community and a nation that were “kinda sleepwalking towards the End of History until recently” — the globalization and outsourcing of everything, and the apparent triumph of market economics over national strategic interests. Her image for the correction is the one that sticks: photos of Ukrainian cities that look decorated with fake Halloween cobwebs until you look closer and see “thousands upon thousands of miles of fiber optic cables — left over from drone warfare. The future is coming faster, and weirder, than anybody is ready for.” The lesson the US has drawn is “if you can’t make your own bullets, you’re not really in charge.”

She is candid about why the old arrangement was rational. “We had this happy dream since the 90s where China would make the body of everything but we made the brains of everything… Manufacturing has a hard time competing with consulting or investment banking, when it comes to your future contribution to the economy and to your family prosperity. I get it.” The contrast that broke it is concrete: an intern walked into a Chinese mall and found a Unitree store selling humanoid robots “probably manufactured within the week like they’re a piece of fresh fruit,” with a demo boxing match, dishwashing inspection, and an alarmingly low price. Meanwhile “in California some of our powerlines are over 100 years old, and they start fires all the time.”

The optimistic half: the US still has “the deepest and most adaptable and opportunistic capital markets in world history” — the S&P reinventing itself around AI infrastructure in under five years is “a genuine miracle” few free markets could produce — because “America is the greatest country in the world at identifying people and ideas that seem important, and giving them a shot.”

The framework. Her definition is the load-bearing move: a factory is not a Ford assembly line, a 90s sweatshop or an early iPhone plant. “A ‘Factory’ is not a physical snapshot in time. It’s a concept. It’s a way of systems thinking derived from first principles. It’s about breaking down problems into composable parts, using technology to automate repetitive processes, then identifying bottlenecks and fixing them… And then doing that again and again and again at scale.” The gigafactory version: lithium in one side, batteries out the other, and everything between is “constantly rederiving from first principles, ‘what do my raw materials cost, and what is the correct way to arrange those atoms so that out comes a battery?’”

She walks the factory mindset through the lifecycle with portfolio examples. Site selection — Mariana Minerals, extracting lithium from oilfield waste, replaced months of consultants evaluating water, power and local regulation with an AI platform that screened thousands of sites in parallel in a couple of hours; the point is less the saved months than that an expensive, conservative start “will start you off on the back foot to such a degree that you have to play it safe and conservative through the whole rest of the project.” Permitting — Hadrian reasoned that if AI is building the factory it should also prepare it for certification, and now brings factories online in under six months against a process that usually takes years. Design — Diode, designing circuit boards for aerospace, defense and robotics, where one mistake wrecks the board (“really, a factory is made up of circuit boards; it’s turtles all the way down”). Build — Castelion’s 1,000-acre rocket-motor campus in New Mexico, building the machine that builds the machine. Run — where rediscovery starts again, illustrated by the three generations of SpaceX Raptor engine, the third of which “looks almost like a toy, it’s so simple. That’s factory mindset.”

The takeaway she actually wants. Not that technology gets smarter. Asked by a mid-size-business CEO how AI will change his business, the wrong answer is “all of your business surfaces are going to be smart now.” The right answer: “There are four or five people in your company right now, and you don’t know who they are yet, but in the next year they are going to deliver you 100x times the amount of value you ever thought possible out of them… And his job, in that moment, is to identify those people and promote them and give their ideas a shot.” The instruction to the students is to be that person, and to start now — “Use every AI tool you can, for the most difficult tasks you can… get your reps in.”

She closes: “This story, of how we’re going to change manufacturing and building and all kinds of businesses, is the most American comeback story there is. You cannot keep a country down that is built for giving people a shot.”
