The Meaning of Conservatism

Scruton’s attempt to state conservatism as a positive political philosophy rather than as reluctance about change or as a variant of free-market liberalism. His conservatism is built on allegiance rather than contract: the authority of institutions, the family, established religion and the nation are treated as constitutive of the self that liberalism assumes already exists, and he is explicit that this puts him at odds with the market individualism often filed alongside him on the right.

Why it’s on the list: It is the anchor of the Modern Conservatism section, which the curriculum keeps distinct from its classical-liberal and libertarian sections precisely because Scruton’s argument is not an economic one.
