Why it’s on the list: Kipling’s 1894 stories, most of them about Mowgli — a boy raised by wolves, taught the Law of the Jungle by Baloo and Bagheera, hunted by the tiger Shere Khan, and belonging fully to neither the animals nor the village — alongside Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and The White Seal.
