A history of how Greek learning reached medieval Europe by way of the Arab world — the translation movement centred on Baghdad’s Bayt al-Hikma, the Arabic commentaries on Aristotle and Ptolemy, and the astronomers, mathematicians and physicians whose work Western scholars later travelled to Spain and Sicily to render into Latin. Lyons argues the debt is far larger than the standard story of a Renaissance rediscovery allows.
