The History of Civilization in Europe

Guizot’s Sorbonne lecture course, arguing that what distinguishes European civilisation is that no single principle ever won — church, empire, feudal nobility, free cities and monarchy all survived in tension, and the resulting competition is what produced political liberty. He treats civilisation as the joint development of society and of the individual, and reads European history as the slow accumulation of both.
